Artist Statement

I was born in Canada of Swiss and English-Irish parents and grew up in several countries before coming to Ireland and marrying an Irishman. My love of horses brought me to Ireland and they often appear in my work. They are very symbolic when they appear in my dreams. Making art is reaching into another world.

Birds have also unexpectedly appeared in my paintings. They too are very symbolic.

The swallows build their nests in the loft beside my studio and their incredible journey of migration fascinates me. Like them, I come from somewhere else. There is a sense of not belonging in the figures I paint.

My paintings are a like a journal where I respond to the world around me. I am strongly influenced by my imagination and unconscious.

A story or an image catches my attention, and in the process of painting, my search for the right colour and composition will overtake the story. I build up the paint in layers which create surprising new colours. I try to let a painting just ‘be’ what it wants to be. Then I reach the point where it speaks to me.
